Area Rugs: Sizing Your Rug

To further our blog discussion on the article provided by Karastan's website; determining the proper size for a rug is just as important as finding the right color and pattern. To start, simply measure your room; then follow our room-by-room measuring guide to find the best fit. Keep in mind that we also offer custom-sizing for hard-to-fit areas.
Picture
Dining Room
In a dining room, measure the length and width of the table. The rug needs to be large enough to allow chairs to be pushed back from the table without falling off the rug. This means that any of the chairs can be in a more conversational position before and after the meal without moving off the rug. Allow 30 inches on each side for side and armchairs.

Picture
Family Room
The general rule for sizing a rug is to allow 12 to 18 inches of flooring to “frame” the rug. For a small room, 12 inches may be more than enough space. One large rug works best in a large room because it does not visually divide the room. However, if the room has several furniture groupings, each can be organized with rugs compatible in size and color but not necessarily matching.

Picture
Bedrooms
In bedrooms, one large rug is luxurious, but the bed will cover most of it. Smaller equal-sized rugs used around the bed are another option. The soft comfort of a rug is most appreciated when stepping in and out of bed.

Picture
Hallways
In hallways, the length is optional. Try to place a runner rug so it does not end in the middle of a doorway. In a very long hall, several small runners can work. They do not have to match but the colors should coordinate.

Area Rugs: Selecting The Right Color, Pattern and Texture

Action Carpet and Floor Décor offers an amazing selection of area rugs to suit any room décor, theme and personality.  Regardless of your tastes-traditional or contemporary, rustic or cutting-edge, Action Carpet and Floor Décor can help you explore the endless opportunities.  Selecting the right color, pattern and texture is a personal choice. However, an article written by Karastan (karastan.com/rugs) can help narrow down your choices with practical design and decorating advice.

One of the best places to start is by asking yourself a few questions. Is your room formal or informal? Do you want an area rug that defines your decorating scheme or one that supports the décor? Are you looking for bright or subdued colors? What shape best fits your space?

With those thoughts in mind, let’s dig a little deeper to explore the wonderful world of color, pattern, and texture. You’ll find valuable advice on each topic, along with room-by-room measuring tips and custom-sizing options, by continuing to read.

Make Color Work For You
Color is an elusive and complex medium. Nothing can change the look of a room more than color. From paint to floorcovering, it is what binds the room together. In fact, some consider color the pivotal element that can make or break a room’s design.

Since floorcovering accounts for almost thirty percent of a room’s color, it is important to determine the role it plays in your decorating plan. If your area rug is going to be the dominant element, choose a patterned rug with distinctive color combinations. Use shades from the rug to select paints and accessories; then carry those color themes into adjacent rooms with coordinating Karastan rugs.

If your rug is going to play a secondary role, then keep it fairly neutral. It can still be patterned, but in subtle tones that complement other furnishings and fabrics in the room. Should you decide to use your rug as a backdrop for other furnishings, selecting a textured rug—with a ground color slightly lighter or darker than your walls— helps it quietly blend into the décor.

The Power of Pattern
Selecting the right rug is a very personal one when it comes to pattern. Whether traditional or contemporary, what matters most is how the pattern makes you feel. The best decorating always reflects the personality of its owner.

Patterned rugs bring an air of richness and intimacy to larger spaces. They also provide instant personality and character, allowing you to create a certain style. A traditional, floral rug may conjure up an English country garden, while a geometric rug creates a modern mood. Mixing patterns can be tricky. Remember, if the patterns are related by form, color or texture, the mix is more likely to succeed.

When used together well, complementary patterns are excellent at defining spaces. Use them to create conversation areas in large rooms or to separate a dining area. Don’t be afraid to use them under tables where spills are likely to occur. Patterned rugs are much better than solids at disguising spots and stains.

Add Texture to Your Floor
Color can be used to achieve drama and impact, but there is nothing like texture to elevate a room that lacks pattern. Texture is all about how something feels when you touch it. Everything in your home makes a textural contribution—be it rough, smooth, nubby or silky. A room decorated with chrome furniture, glossy paint and slate flooring might be described as “hard-edged and cold”. Warm, cozy textures, such as wool, are linked with comfort of home.

Blending textures can help balance a room. Cool surfaces such as leather, glass, and stone can be offset with the warm textural effect of a Karastan rug. A wool-loop from Karastan’s Woolcheck Heather Collection can be paired with a rich wall color to bring warmth to a room that doesn’t receive much sun.

Sizing your rug

Determining the proper size for a rug is just as important as finding the right color and pattern.  Stay tuned for next weeks article to find the best fit for your space.

Define your Look
Given your home's architecture and your personality, begin by selecting a personal design theme.  It is your world. Whether you are building new or redecorating a room - or the whole house - the place to begin in the project is with you.  Ultimately, the best designs reflect your personality and those of your family.   That means taking a look at your lifestyle as well as what you like.
Shop Prepared
Knowing what you want is just the beginning.  You can be the biggest help to yourself if you arrive prepared.  This is actually the beginning of the fun part.  Tae all your ideas with you.  Put together a traveling kit with pillows, fabric swatches, paint chips, and magazine shots of things you love.  This will help you illustrate common designs that appeal to you and coordinate a room.  Find your colors and tones and stay within that range.  If you are prepared, you can be confident knowing your lifestyle, preferences and personality are part of the decision making process.

Select items suited to your room
Look for traffic flow and how your family lives.  A polypropylene rug is great for that space where spills may happen and a silk pillow is an elegant addition to the master bedroom but not the playroom.  If you are going to worry about a piece being broken or getting dirty it is the wrong choice for that room.  Be careful to match sizes of items to the size of the room.  An unusual oversized accent is a great focal point and conversation starter.  But a room filled with items that are over-scaled will leave it looking small and cluttered.  Always remember to carry your room dimensions in your traveling decorating kit.

Select colors and tones with the same value range - light, medium, dark
Colors are a wonderful way to express yourself and your fashion sense.  If you are hesitant about bold or vivid colors, go with neutrals like one tone of warm cream in your area rug and another for walls and accent pillows.  Warm colors like red and orange make a room feel cozy while blues and greens make for a light and airy space.   Borrow colors from your upholstery to coordinate rugs, pillows, and artwork or from the floor up using a great area rug as a focal point and pulling colors and textures from it for upholstery and accessories.  If you need to decorate over time, you will have a reference of color and texture from which to build your dream home.  A few days invested up front in living with your selections can save money and heartache in the long run.  Get a quart of paint and cover a portion of the wall.  Tape fabrics and lay your rug up against it.  Walk past your test area for a full day and see how it feels to be living with this color scheme.  Watch for color shifts as light changes from early morning to evening.  Hint: pure white ceilings tend to neutralize your color scheme.  Painting the ceiling a subtle tint of your main color will actually compliment your color scheme.

Decorate around elements you love
We recommend that you start with the piece you love the most and work around it.  Artwork, a sofas, an area rug or even a favorite pillow can help create your decorating palette.  It is a favorite for a reason and most often the reason is you like the design and colors.  When you know the starting point, find three coordinating fabrics and you are on your way to a fabulous room. Just remember to make choices that you like, reflect your personality and will make your home comfortable.

A Quick Guide to Choosing Carpet

One of the most difficult selections to make when doing a home remodel or changing your flooring is carpeting.    The sheet variety of what’s available to you in the way of color, texture, fiber type, look and, most importantly, feel can be overwhelming.  When there is a budget to consider, the problem becomes all the more complicated.  But carpet can change the entire feel of a house, so it’s vital you chose the right one for your needs and lifestyle. That is why we here at Action Carpet & Floor Décor have put together this helpful set of things to consider when choosing your carpet.
Before you start shopping for carpet, assess the area:

Size
Carpet is sold by the square foot, so it is important to know exactly how big the area that you are planning to refinish is.  Do not underestimate size – do a careful measurement with a standardized measuring tool.

Estimated Wear and Tear
Do a rough estimate of how much traffic you are expecting the area to receive.  Are you re-flooring a room that your family uses heavily, such as the living room or entrance hall?  Are you refurbishing a study, which will subject the carpet to the relentless roll of a desk chair?  Do you have pets or small children, which may subject your carpet to a higher stain frequency?  Make a clear list of your requirements in this regard, and take it with your when you are buying flooring.

Types of Carpet
There are two basic structural categories:

Woven Carpet
Woven carpets are traditionally created by weaving pile yarn and backing fabric together, creating a hardy, flatter, tough textile which tends to last a long time, though more expensive than the standard tufted carpet.

Tufted Carpet
Tufted Carpets are perhaps the most common and cost effective.  Made by inserting yarn into a backing fabric and adding another fabric layer, these carpets come in may varieties, making them the perfect option when considering new flooring.

Types of Tufted Carpet

Berber
made from continuous fiber loops, either level loops or multi-level loops for different textures.  Berber Carpet is flat, stain resistant and extremely durable.

Textured
Textured Carpet is made from yarn tufts cut to different lengths.  The textures hide dirt and wear, making this option great for areas that experience high foot-traffic.

Frieze
Frieze carpet is made from twisted cut fibers.  It’s a more lush version of the textured carpet and fancier than the Berber.

There are many other types of tufted carpets; but armed with these few basics, you can go forth and start your research into your fantastic new flooring.  If you get stuck, don’t hesitate to call us at Action Carpet & Floor Décor.  Our qualified consultants will always be happy to help.

Tips for Purchasing Stone and Tile

When selecting your particular stone or tile in San Diego, there are a couple of factors you need to take into account:
  • Tile hardness
  • Ease of maintenance and cleaning
  •  It's natural resistance to the elements
  • Slip resistance
The above are generally dependent on whether or not the material has been glazed.  Unglazed tile (natural stone) require more care than glazed materials, but with proper maintenance, it is suitable for almost any floor or wall application.  A strong ceramic tile (porcelain) is suitable for both residential and commercial applications.  This particular material is durable, highly stain resistant and, overall, a fantastic option to use in wet environments, such as the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room or even outside.

Granite, Marble and Limestone in San Diego
Granite, marble and limestone in San Diego are sourced from natural quarries and as a result, no two tiles will ever be the same.  This allows for incredibly unique flooring that is natural and earthy in appearance, but also incredibly sophisticated and classical.  Aside from the natural beauty and luster of stone, this material is very easy to maintain, which makes them ideal for any environment, home setting or applications.

Easy to customize any room with stone and tile, can provide lasting value for homes, offices, restaurants and other public places.  Whether you want to add blue mosaic tile to an exterior wall or add dark granite to your kitchen countertop, we here at Action Carpet and Floor Decor offer an amazing selection of products that will suit your every need.

Adding an area rug to your home will add a cozy and sophisticated feel. Don’t stop with your new animal print area rug though. You can customize any room with throw pillows that match your zebra or leopard print area rug. If you want to take it a step further there are always chairs, tables, ottomans, and other accessories and furniture you can add to tie the animal print theme together. Another way to tie the room together is by choosing colors for the wall or accessories that compliments the animal print rug or carpet. Something else to consider is mixing up the animal print accessories with the area rug. This will create some contrast as well as add a bit more boldness to the room.

So how do you choose the right animal print carpet or rug for you home in the Carlsbad, San Marcos, San Diego and Vista areas? That’s simple. Let the design consultants at Action Carpet & Floor Décor guide you in the right direction. Consider us your tour guides on this safari adventure.

Here are some do’s and don’ts when deciding on what animal print carpet or rug to choose.

Do choose an animal print that compliments the colors and theme of your room

Don’t overdo the animal print. By this, I mean painting the walls to match the rug and all the furniture. It is good to have some contrast in the room. So as long as the color scheme matches your chosen animal print, you should be good to go.

Do use art and other accent pieces in the room to balance out the décor.

Do re-upholster old furniture giving it new life to match your new animal print area rug.

So if it is time for a change in your home décor, you better get to our showroom. Action Carpet & Floor Décor is also carrying wool from New Zealand and Belgium. Our design consultants are ready to serve you and advise you in any way they can. Let us know how we can bring a little bit of your wild side out in your home.
